Hi everyone! Thanks for coming back and today I am going to tell you all about the debates I did through this reflection and I hope you enjoy!
-Which debate topic was most interesting to you? Which topic was most controversial?
Personally, I think that the most interesting topic to me was the debate about report cards. I was in that one so I didn't have the chance to experience being the audience however my friends did tell me that they couldn't decide after hearing an intense debate. Most importantly, I did agree to the other side and I was put on my opposite side so I did feel a little weird while fighting for the side I disagree.
-Talk about a really convincing warrant you heard or said during a debate.
A convincing warrant that I said was a fact. It said:
" 82% of almost 11,000 students who visited a museum and saw a picture was able to understand the concept than ones who didn't go. "
Sorry, I forgot the source.
-Which debate was most challenging for you? Explain why.
The debate that was most challenging for me was the debate about plastic cups. Did you know that I was saying that plastic cups are beneficial for the school? I lost at that debate about convincing my audience since I couldn't find a lot of information on the benefits of plastic cups. I also have to say that my partner and I didn't really work well with each other due to our differences and so it was challenging for me to handle.
-What did you improve the most in? How do you know?
After a moment of considering all my feedback forms, I believe that I improved the most in my researching skills. At first, I was just finding websites and whatever I found, I considered that was true and reliable. To fix this problem, my class mates and I were taught how to find reliable sources using different clues and strategies. For my first debate, I got a terrible grade on using caution when finding sources and stating facts and statistics and so for my last debate, I am very proud of my grade for researching and stating convincing facts and statistics.
-Which debate are you most proud of? Explain why.
I am most proud of for my television debate- TV is a good influence on kids because of many different reasons. First of all, it was my first debate ever and that was a topic I totally agree with in the first place so it was very easy for me to debate about it. Secondly, I worked with Melanie, someone who I can trust and feel the most comfortable working with. She is an amazing partner and she knows how to share the workload with me and offer support to me when I need it. Lastly, I think that because I were given a graphic organizer, I had a good feeling while working because my warrants were organized much more than the ones I recorded into my notebook.
-How does it feel to be assigned a side of a debate you don't agree with?
I felt pressured when assigned with a side of a debate I don't agree with because when I have to debate and put my best effort into the side and that I disagree, it makes me feel like being forced to do something I don't like so I didn't make a lot of progress. Nevertheless, challenges always make us more better because it's called a challenge. I will try to put my best effort into my work next time even if I were assigned a side of a debate I don't agree with.
-100% of the class changed their mind at least once during the debates. What does this tell you?
This tells me that my classmates and I are experts at debating and at listening too. It also tells me that we are all being open- minded because sometimes, what we are thinking isn't actually our true thought. Obviously, this proves to us that my classmates and I are very careful when making decisions.
-Give an example of a time you had your mind changed and explain what changed it.
An interesting time I changed my mind is the debate about computers and teachers. First I thought that computers shouldn't replace teachers but with the convincing evidence, I changed my mind and now I think computers should replace teachers because computers can work independently with kids and focus carefully on the kids' ability.
