In class, we are practicing how to divide different numbers. We used 2 different strategies to solve 2 kinds of familiar problems.
Divisible problems: Partitioning
Non-divisible problems: Long-division
For example: Partitioning
1. 864/3?
2. Break 864 into place values= 800,60,4
3. Consider whether 3 is divisible by the place values or not. 800,no 60,yes 4,no
4. Mostly it was no so we change numbers
5. The new numbers are: 600,240,24
6. Now divide. 600/3=200 240/3=80 24/3=8
7. Add all the quotients together: 200+80+8= 288
8. Final answer: 288
Long-divsion
1. 9765/24
2. Look at 9000. 24 goes into 9000 approximately 200 times. 200x24= 480000
3. Now subtract 4800 from 9765. 9765-4800=4965
4. Now look at 4965. 24 goes into 4965 about 200 times. 24x200=4800
5. Now subtract 4800 from 4965. 4965-4800=165
6. Look at 165. 24 goes into 165 about 5 times. 24x5=120
7. Subtract 120 from 165. Just by looking, I know it's 45.
8. I guess that 24 goes into 45 once or 1. 24x1=24
9. Subtract 24 from 48. 45-24=21
10. 21 is a remainder.
11. Add all the underline numbers together and count 21 as a remainder. 200+200+5+1=406 R21
You have actually just learned how to divide. Any questions or concerns, in the comment section below please. Thanks for considering and reading. Hope you like me post!
